How to listen to music with friends online

Bring your friends into one room, choose a soundtrack together and talk while it plays. This guide takes you from your first room to a repeat listening session, with fixes for the most common playback problems.

1. Create a room and invite a friend

Open Create room, enter the name your friends will see and choose a room code, or leave the code blank to generate one. Guests can create and join rooms without registering. Use an account if you want to save playlists.

Send the room code through your usual group chat. Your friend opens AllTune, chooses Join room and enters that code and a display name. Check the people list to confirm that you are in the same room before starting your queue. A room code lets other people join, so share it with the people you intend to invite.

2. Choose music and share DJ access

As host or DJ, paste a YouTube video link into Add to queue and choose Add. Start with one track and confirm that your friend can hear it before building a longer queue. Spotify and Apple Music links are not supported playback sources.

To take turns, the host can give a friend DJ access through the room's people controls. A listener without DJ access cannot manage playback just because they have a paid membership. Plus and Premium hosts can instead enable guest song requests, with approval controls, so listeners can suggest music without becoming DJs.

Try a simple discovery session: each person chooses one song, explains their choice in chat, and waits until everyone has had a turn before adding another. Agree who will handle skips so the queue does not change unexpectedly.

3. Share your own audio when appropriate

The upload control accepts MP3, MP4, M4A, OGG, WAV, FLAC and AAC files, with an application limit of 50 MiB per file. Your browser must also be able to decode the file; a supported extension alone does not guarantee playback. Hosting limits can reject an upload before that size.

Only share audio you own or have permission to share. Uploaded files are temporary: files older than two hours are eligible for cleanup when another upload occurs. Keep your originals on your own device. AllTune's room upload feature is not a permanent music backup.

4. Save the YouTube tracks for next time

  1. Sign in to your AllTune account.
  2. Use the queue's Save control and give the playlist a name you will recognize.
  3. Open your profile and find My playlists.
  4. Choose Load, then create a room or join one where you have DJ access. The staged tracks can then enter that room's queue.

Saving includes the current YouTube track and queued YouTube entries. Uploaded files and generated audio are not included in this playlist save. A playlist stores references to YouTube videos, not offline copies; a video that becomes unavailable may stop playing later.

Premium members can configure a personal room and saved settings on the website. When signed in, the homepage offers a shortcut to that saved room. A regular room code should not be treated as a permanent address for future sessions.

If something does not play

The room opens, but I hear nothing
Tap the listening or playback prompt if one appears. Check your device media volume, the room player volume and whether the browser tab is muted. Confirm that a track is actually playing rather than waiting in an empty queue.
Only one friend cannot hear a YouTube video
Try another video. Regional availability and embedding restrictions can differ between listeners. A paid AllTune membership does not bypass those restrictions.
Music stops when I lock my phone
Keep the browser or current web-based Android app open in the foreground while listening. Background playback depends on the source, browser and phone restrictions and is not guaranteed. Installing the website does not automatically remove those limits.
I joined, but cannot add or skip songs
Ask the host for DJ access, or use guest requests when the host has enabled them. Your account membership and your role in a particular room are separate.
The connection drops or playback falls behind
Check your connection and allow the room to reconnect. If it does not recover, rejoin using the same code. Ask the host whether the room is still active before repeatedly trying an old code.
My saved playlist is missing some songs
The Save control keeps YouTube entries only. Uploaded and generated tracks are excluded. Keep local audio separately and use Song Studio's own song controls for generated music.

Help, privacy and safety

When describing a playback problem, include your phone or computer model, browser, music source, whether the screen was locked and the steps that caused it. Never share your password or another person's private information.
